Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder in which nerve cells in the brain that produce the substance dopamine gradually decline. In the Netherlands, an estimated 67,000 people live with Parkinson's disease or atypical parkinsonism.

Parkinson's disease

Characteristics and symptoms

The condition can manifest itself in various ways, including:

  • Shaking (tremor).
  • Moving slowly or having difficulty starting to move (bradykinesia).
  • Muscle stiffness (rigidity).
  • Problems with posture and balance, sometimes falling.
  • Previous complaints such as reduced sense of smell, constipation, or sleep disorders may precede the classic motor symptoms.

Because every person is different, the course of the disease varies greatly—both in terms of symptoms and the pace of change.

Why is physical therapy important for Parkinson's disease?

Physical therapy plays an important role in Parkinson's disease because:

  • Exercise helps to maintain or improve physical fitness, muscle strength, and stability.
  • Physical therapy can help prevent or delay problems with daily movements, such as difficulty walking, turning over in bed, getting up from a chair, or loss of balance.
  • By exercising properly and remaining functionally active, the risk of additional complaints (such as falls, osteoporosis, reduced fitness) can be reduced.
