Osteoarthritis sometimes makes exercise painful. The GLA:D education and training program helps reduce pain and prevent symptoms from getting worse. You can take the program at Fysiotherapie de Jong.

What is osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is an ailment that often gets worse with age. Healthy cartilage provides shock absorption and keeps a joint moving smoothly. With osteoarthritis, the cartilage in the joint slowly wears away, making movement less smooth and can become painful. Sometimes the joint may even swell and feel warm. This is most common in the knee or hip.

Why GLA:D?

GLA:D® is an information and training program for patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis, based on the latest scientific insights and developed in Denmark (GLA:D stands for Good Life with Osteoarthritis in Denmark) . The program is already being used in more than ten countries and was recently implemented in the Eindhoven region by the Maxima Medical Center.

The program helps reduce pain (reducing the use of painkillers), improve function and prevent symptoms from worsening. Our physical therapists underwent special training for this purpose. With your own commitment and guidance from our specialized physiotherapist, you can delay or even prevent a knee or hip replacement.

Research and treatment

At Fysiotherapie de Jong , we work according to the GLA:D program in the treatment of hip and knee osteoarthritis.

After being determined by your doctor, you can check in with us for an initial appointment. The program includes an explanation of what osteoarthritis is and how best to deal with it. We also start the 6-12 week exercise program, which we tailor to your personal situation.

Cost

Most health insurers cover physical therapy for knee or hip osteoarthritis 12 times per 12 months under basic coverage (this does not apply to Friesland and Zorg & Zekerheid). Starting in 2026, VGZ and Zilveren Kruis will not apply a deductible.  This means that as a patient insured with VGZ or Zilveren Kruis, you will not incur any costs for these 12 sessions.
Additional sessions beyond the 12 may be covered under supplemental insurance. If you do not have supplemental insurance, we apply the followingrates.

Coverage s vary by health insurance plan; therefore, check with your own health insurance provider to find out how it works.

GP/specialist referral

Would you like to schedule an appointment for treatment of knee or hip osteoarthritis? With some health insurance providers, you’ll need a referral from a primary care physician or medical specialist:

  • A referral is required for Caresq, CZ, Salland, or Zorg & Zekerheid.
  • Not required at ASR, De Friesland, DSW, Menzis, ONVZ, VGZ, and Zilveren Kruis.

You can then contact us to schedule an initial appointment with Espen van de Ven,Lotte van Montfort, or Natascha Huls, our physical therapists who specialize in the GLA:D program.
