Shockwave therapy can be used to treat pain, chronic tendon problems, trigger points, shin splints, and conditions such as spasticity.
What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy(also known as ESWT—Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy) is a modern, non-invasive treatment that uses targeted shock waves to treat pain, chronic tendon problems, trigger points, shin splints, and spasticity, for example . These shock waves stimulate the body’s natural healing process, improve blood flow, and help damaged tissue regenerate more quickly.
When canshockwave therapyhelp?
Shockwave therapycan be used successfully to treat conditions such as:
- Heel pain / heel spur
- Achillodynia (pain in the Achilles tendon)
- Tennis elbow & golfer's elbow
- Shoulder pain associated with calcification
- Hamstring issues
- Greater trochanter pain syndrome
- Trigger points
- Shin splints
- Spasticity
- Chronic tendon and muscle inflammation
- other muscle and/or tendon problems
Benefits ofShockwave Therapy
- Treatment without surgery or medication;
- Stimulation of the body's natural healing and regeneration processes;
- Often a noticeable reduction in pain after just a few sessions;
- Few side effects; possible mild redness or tenderness at the treatment site
IsShockwavepainful?
The treatment may be uncomfortable, depending on the nature of your condition and your personal pain tolerance. Most people find it to be a brief, tolerable discomfort. The therapist can adjust the intensity if necessary.
Research and treatment
Our physical therapist will begin with a physical examination and may perform an ultrasound to assess the problem. If shockwave therapy is indeed indicated, treatment can begin immediately.
Before treatment, a conductive gel is first applied to the skin. Next, short shock waves are delivered using a special device aimed at the painful area. You will hear a faint “tapping” sound and feel brief pulses; this is a sign that the waves are reaching the area where healing needs to be stimulated.
A session usually lasts about 5–10 minutes. On average, 4 to 6 treatments are needed to achieve good results.
Shockwave therapy is always combined with physical therapy treatments and exercises to increase the body’s tolerance and support the natural healing process.
Cost
Shockwave therapy is used as part of the overall treatment plan. As such, shockwave therapy is covered by your supplemental insurance. If you do not have supplemental insurance, we charge the following rates.
