Dry needling is very effective in resolving tension in muscles. Tension is caused by contraction in the muscle, which can sometimes be present for years.

Dry Needling

During daily life, every person experiences some degree of physical strain. Work, hobbies, sports, housework and, for example, caring for children require physical activity from your body. Often you are fit enough to cope with it all. However, for various reasons, it can also cause muscle overload. An overworked muscle can feel tense and often has several sore points. Dry needling can help you with this.

Why Dry Needling

In our muscles there are a lot of "motor units," small nerve pathways that are responsible for contracting and relaxing that part of the muscle. Due to overload, these nerve pathways can become dysregulated, causing that part of the muscle to remain constantly tensed. We call this a trigger point. These trigger points are often painful but can also cause radiating pain.

These trigger points are often deeper in the muscle, so you have little influence with massage. Because we work with an acupuncture needle during dry needling, we can now treat deeper into the muscle. With this we can solve the trigger points much more effectively.

Research and treatment

The physical therapist will assess your symptoms through an interview and focused examination. The muscles are examined for trigger points. The therapist feels with the fingers if there are any hardenings in the muscle. Exactly those points will be treated by the therapist to relax the muscles.

During the treatment, you do not feel anything from the acupuncture needle. So you won't feel any sharp or stinging pain. When we are on the trigger point you do get a pressing feeling in the muscle. You can also feel a short tightening of the muscle.
