Our Fall Prevention training is designed for people with an increased risk of falling. This may have come up during the completion of a Fall Screening, a short questionnaire. Or perhaps you have already fallen once or more in the past year and want to prevent a recurrence.

What is Fall Prevention?
Fall prevention literally means "preventing falls. During a fall prevention training, you will be given helpful tips to make sure you don't fall (again). You learn to recognize dangerous situations. You work on improving your condition and muscle strength and you practice a good way of walking. This reduces the chance of falling.
Why Fall Prevention?
Falling is no fun. If you fall, you can break a bone. Or suffer a concussion. If you have fallen, you may feel embarrassed. Or you become insecure: you are afraid of falling again. You may prefer to stay home so you don't fall again. It can make you feel lonely. Do you recognize this? You are certainly not alone.
On average, someone falls so badly every 5 minutes in the Netherlands that treatment at the Emergency Department is necessary. This while many fall incidents can be prevented. That is why the Fall Prevention program was created. There are many ways to prevent falls.
Research and treatment
The program begins with a comprehensive fall analysis. This appointment takes about 25 minutes. Our physical therapist will ask some questions and do some tests. These will be used to determine if you have a low, moderate or high risk of falling. The physical therapist will discuss with you what she can do for you.
Training at moderate fall risk
This training is for you if you have a moderate fall risk based on the fall analysis.
You will exercise twice a week for 5 consecutive weeks. A physical therapist will supervise this. You follow this training at the same time as other people.
During the lessons/training you will learn in which situations there is a high risk of falling. With the help of an obstacle course you will learn to deal with such situations. You will also learn how to land correctly if you do fall. We will practice the proper way to fall. Of course, we make sure that the practice is done safely, for example, by using a large soft mat. It is good to practice this, but it is not mandatory. We also practice walking in a busy environment in game form. The exercises are built up slowly, starting at your own level.
At the end of the exercise program, you will review with the physical therapist how you can continue to get enough exercise. By moving enough, you can prevent falls in the future.
Training for high fall risk
This counseling is for you if you have a high risk of falling based on fall analysis. You will follow a program with individual guidance from a physical therapist. Even if you currently use a walking aid, such as a walker, you will follow an individual program.
Training at low fall risk
If the fall analysis indicates you have a low risk of falling, training with a physical therapist is not necessary. However, you will receive information about high-risk situations. The physical therapist will also give you advice for doing exercises independently and staying in good shape.
Benefits of Fall Prevention
Scientific research shows that by following a fall prevention program
- you get a better walking pattern,
- develops a better balance,
- fall anxiety is significantly reduced and
- reduces the risk of falls by an average of 50%.
