Fall Prevention is designed for people with an increased or high risk of falling. This risk may have been revealed by completing a Fall Screening, a short questionnaire. Or perhaps you have already fallen once or several times last year and want to prevent a recurrence. Whatever the case, we would like to help you on your way to a safer and more active life!

What is Fall Prevention?

Fall prevention literally means "preventing falls. During a fall prevention training, you will be given helpful tips to make sure you don't fall (again). You learn to recognize dangerous situations. You work on improving your condition and muscle strength and you practice a good way of walking. This reduces the chance of falling.

Why Fall Prevention?

Scientific research shows that by following a fall prevention program

  • you get a better walking pattern;
  • develops a better balance;
  • fall anxiety is significantly reduced;
  • reduces the risk of falls by an average of 50%.

Research and treatment

  • The program begins with a comprehensive fall analysis. This appointment lasts about 25 minutes. During this session, our physical therapist will ask some questions and do some tests. Based on the results, we determine whether you have a low, increased or high risk of falling. After that, we will discuss together what we can do for you.

Training at low fall risk

If you have a low risk of falling, you do not need intensive training with a physical therapist. However, you will receive important information and advice about high-risk situations and how to avoid falling.

Training for increased fall risk

For increased fall risk, we offer the programs Falling Past Time and In Balance.

  • Falling Past Time: This training takes 5 weeks, with 2 sessions per week in a small group of 8 people. You will practice falling techniques and work on dealing with risky situations. Our physical therapists provide a safe build-up, starting you at your own level.
  • In Balance: This program lasts 14 weeks and combines tai chi-based exercises with tests and information on movement, balance and fall risk. The goal is to improve your overall fitness, balance and muscle strength.

Training for high fall risk

Do you have a high risk of falling? Then the Otago program is right for you.
  • Otago is an intensive fall training program that you can take individually or in groups. The program lasts 12 months individually and 12 weeks in groups. The training consists of leg muscle strengthening exercises, balance exercises and a walking program. Otago's goal is to reduce falls by improving muscle strength and balance in the elderly.
